FEBRUARY MINUTES

Attendees: 

Dr. Marie Etienne, Maray Salina, Leonor Pupo, Natasha Carr, Chris Varela, Cara Kondaki, Wendie Nemeroff, Dinah Trevil, Rachelle Theodore, Tenesha Avent

 

Welcome:  

SFCCC Co-Chair, Maray Salina greeted the members to the SFCCC Steering Committee meeting. 

 

Risk Reduction Co-Chair Introductions

Dinah Trevil, Director, Sylvester Office of Outreach and Engagement has worked in Cancer research for 9 years with a focus on Cervical, Breast, and Colorectal cancers. Ms. Trevil’s current focus is outreach and engagement of underserved populations in Miami-Dade County.

 

Rachelle Theodore, Owner of CLT Business Solutions, LLC, provides project management services to small businesses, medical offices, and governmental agencies. The focus of the company is to provide sustainable, timely, and cost-effective solutions to clients. 

 

Workgroup Updates:

SFCCC work group updates are as follows:

1. Synergy and Networking/Membership Work Group

Leonor Pupo, Synergy and Networking/Membership Work Group leader stated the work group will be scheduling a meeting to brainstorm innovative ways to increase membership of SFCCC

​

2. Risk Reduction Work Group

Risk Reduction Work Group leader, Dinah Trevil, stated the University of Miami has conducted presentations and held events focused on Cervical Cancer and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) education and screening. Ms. Trevil’s team also hosted events on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. Students on this campus were educated on the benefits of HPV screenings.

 

3. Disparities Work Group

Chris Varela, Disparities Work Group leader, stated the Giant Colon has about 5 reservations for the month of March. This marks the first-year members in Palm Beach County at Delray Medical Center have reserved the Colon. Mr. Varela announced there are still spots available for the Giant Colon reservations. American Cancer Society has moved from their office in Doral. The Giant Colon will be held at a climate control storage facility to make it more feasible for members to pickup and drop off.

4. Survivorship and Quality of Life Work Group

Cara Kondaki, Survivorship and Quality of Life Work Group leader stated the work group has finalized the date of the 2020 Survivorship Symposium. The event will be held on June 6, 2020 at Holy Cross Hospital. The Mayor of Ft. Lauderdale/Oakland Park will open the event with a Proclamation of Survivorship Day. Once again, the work group has invited all the major hospitals to present during the event. Holy Cross, Memorial Healthcare System, and Cleveland Clinic Florida have confirmed presentations. The presentations will consist of “Fueling Up on the Go” (Dietician), “Get Moving…Get Out...Things to consider when you Travel”, “Setting Realistic Goals in Survivorship”, and “Dream, Plan, Set Your Goals” (Vision Board Activity). Wendie Nemeroff, Catholic Hospice, offered to sponsor breakfast for the symposium.

New Business:

1. 2020-20205 Florida State Cancer Plan

      a. Tenesha Avent, SFCCC Coordinator, stated the new Florida Cancer Plan was announced on January 22,                  2020.  

      b. The release date will be sometime in April or May. The Collaborative will begin activities from the new Florida

          Cancer Plan starting in July.

  2. March Quarterly Meeting Breakfast Sponsorship
